Route of the Cathars:
Cross the Pyrenees from South to North.
Camí dels Bons Homes (Route of the Cathars) is a trail between the Sanctuary of Queralt in Berga (Catalonia, Spain) and the Castle of Montsegur (Ariège, France) following the migrations routes used by the Cathars or Bons Homes (The Good Men) during the 12th and 14th centuries when they fled persecution by the Crusaders and the Inquisition.

It can be divided in two sections, each of:
4 days / 3 nights.

| Geographic Situation: |

The Route of the Cathars travels across the mountains of French and Catalan Pyrenees, with a total distance of 228.58 Km. and a total gain elevation of 7079m.
|
|
The route goes through the counties of Berguedà, Cerdanya, Alt urgell and Solsonès, in Catalonia; and Arièja in France. The nearest important cities are Barcelona (Catalonia) and Toulouse (France).

Stage 1 - Berga to Gosol 42.79Km and 1500m
Stage 2 - Gosol to Baga 34.28Km and 600m
Stage 3 - Baga to Puigcerda 42.5Km and 1405m
Stage 4 - Puigcerda to L'Ospitalet 41.85Km and 1050m
Stage 5 - L'Ospitalet to Ascon 25.88Km and 1120m
Stage 6 - Ascon to Montsegur 41.28Km and 1404m

| Cathars History. |

From the 10th century to the 14th an heretic religious believe called catharism spread in the south of France.
|
|

The Cathars, also known as good men or perfect, were men and women of strong moral values, which refused richness, did not believe in the Old Testament and disowned the catholic church and the feudal system of the moment.
|

For all this, the good men were considered heretic by the catholic church, which, with the help of the French king and nobility, started their pursuit and extermination.
